As I had anticipated, one or two influential Proprietors of Marine Lots formed themselves opposed to the plan, and through their influence it was defeated by a large majority at a meeting of Holders of Marine Lots, held on the 22 December.
At this Meeting a Deputation was formed to present a remonstrance; the gentlemen forming the Deputation requested an interview, which I willingly acceded to, I fixed the 10th ultimo, and desired the attendance of the Colonial Secretary, the Attorney General, the Colonial Treasurer, and the Surveyor General.
The remonstrance was presented at this interview, and the subject fully discussed.
I enclose copy of the paper handed to me by the Deputation, and the Colonial Secretary's reply thereto.
Another Meeting of Marine Lot Holders was convened on the 5th instant when the Deputation communicated the result of their interview of the 10th ultimo. I understand that nothing further was done.
I am able to state that during the last ten days, much of the opposition to the scheme has been dying away, and I look forward to carrying it out peaceably and beneficially.
In the Minute embodied in the Notification enclosed above the idea is to carry the Sea Road to Possession Point. It has been thought best to proceed by degrees from the Parade Ground Westward, and accordingly in the enclosed Plan by the Surveyor General...
